On Wednesday, Nov 20, as Illinois governor Pat Quinn intends to sign the state’s marriage equality bill, Bishop Thomas Paprocki has scheduled a prayer and exorcism in protest of marriage equality.
The entire concept is a political stunt, fundamentally un-Christ-like, and quite frankly an embarrassment to the Church, especially in hindsight of Pope Francis’ recent statements about gay Catholics in general.
Moreover, the Illinois marriage equality legislation (SB10) has explicit protections for religious institutions - protections which allow them to solemnize marriages according to their doctrine.
In his press release, the Bishop fails to mention exactly how same-sex marriage is “from the devil”.
What motive does the devil have in ensuring that LGBT families and their children are protected with the legal and financial benefits of civil marriage, especially since same-sex marriage has no bearing on opposite-sex couple’s marriages?
It is clear that Bishop Paprocki’s purely religious arguments are out of scope in regard to civil marriage; the Church is already protected by SB10.
With a majority of Americans in support of marriage equality, these politicized stunts only serve to harm the reputation of the Church.
If Bishop Paprocki is really concerned about the family, he should embrace all families in Illinois, including same-sex families, ensuring they are protected by the rights and benefits of civil marriage.
